Welland officials conducted an initial LED retrofit replacement for its downtown decorative lights that indicate that switching to LED street lighting can save the city CAN$253,980 per year by reducing energy and maintenance costs.

The city recently updated the municipal code relating to street lighting to better accommodate a switch to 100-percent LED lighting city-wide. With new guidelines in place, officials put out a call for proposals from LED fixtures vendors and services providers with the intention to move forward replacing all street lighting in Welland with LEDs.

“The City of Welland is committed to high-quality LED lighting that reduces energy and maintenance costs,” noted Mayor Damian Goulborne. “Welland has been immersed in the testing of LED street lighting and aspires to become a green community. “

Making Sense

"The City spends substantial amounts of money every year replacing and maintaining lighting. What the LED City initiative means is not necessarily that we will be spending more, but spending more wisely on emerging technology that will save a lot in the long run... The whole point of declaring this public/private initiative is to develop a long-term plan to save money and take advantage of LED technology to spend smartly. The goal is to get the best lighting value for the citizens of Raleigh and serve as a model for other cities seeking to do the same."

Dan Howe, Deputy City Manager, City of Raleigh, NC
