The City of Ann Arbor spent years working with LED street lighting vendors to perfect a retrofit for its beautiful Lumec globe lights. The expected payoff for this effort is that the 1,600 new LED street lights will save the city more than $100,000 a year in energy and maintenance-cost savings and reduce energy use for street lighting by 50 percent, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2,425 tons annually.
“The decision to switch to LED lighting was based on three years of extensive research on the energy and maintenance-cost savings associated with LED lighting; citizen surveys and a successful trial of 25 LED lights spanning a city block,” said Mayor John Hieftje.
As a result of the trial, the city was awarded a $630,000 grant from
the Ann Arbor Downtown Authority to fund LED retrofits for all the
downtown globe lights. The city is moving forward with LED lighting
in a variety of applications indoors and out.

"The City spends substantial amounts of money every year replacing and maintaining lighting. What the LED City initiative means is not necessarily that we will be spending more, but spending more wisely on emerging technology that will save a lot in the long run... The whole point of declaring this public/private initiative is to develop a long-term plan to save money and take advantage of LED technology to spend smartly. The goal is to get the best lighting value for the citizens of Raleigh and serve as a model for other cities seeking to do the same."
Dan Howe,
Deputy City Manager, City of Raleigh, NC
