The City of Danville began piloting LED lighting as part of joining up with the Go Green Virginia program. The Green Government Challenge part of the initiative is a friendly competition designed to promote implementation of specific environmental policies and practical actions that reduce the carbon emissions generated by both the local government and larger community.

Taking this challenge to heart, Danville officials decided to give LED lighting a try. The city installed LED lights in the Danville Water Treatment Plant and the Adult Detention Center with hopes that the longevity and savings in energy and maintenance costs would go a long way in helping Danville figure highly in the state-wide program.

These installations not only served as a Go Green Virginia demonstration but also will help in developing guidelines for the lighting design of Danville’s new SEnTeC energy research center for the Institutes for Advanced Learning & Research, which is currently under design.

“Danville is proud to be the first city in Virginia to join the LED City program,” said Mayor Sherman Saunders. “We are glad to be a leader in demonstrating the cost savings of LED technology. This LED lighting project exemplifies Danville’s commitment to move forward in the new economy by taking advantage of innovative technology. Danville, and the rest of the country, can no longer afford to rely on the less efficient technologies of the past.”

Plant operators in the water treatment plant are reporting improved productivity and increased task efficiency due to the better quality of the new LED lighting. City officials say LED lighting has also reduced labor costs by approximately $75 per hour that was
previously paid for bulb replacements.

Making Sense

"The City spends substantial amounts of money every year replacing and maintaining lighting. What the LED City initiative means is not necessarily that we will be spending more, but spending more wisely on emerging technology that will save a lot in the long run... The whole point of declaring this public/private initiative is to develop a long-term plan to save money and take advantage of LED technology to spend smartly. The goal is to get the best lighting value for the citizens of Raleigh and serve as a model for other cities seeking to do the same."

Dan Howe, Deputy City Manager, City of Raleigh, NC
