Gwangju, South Korea’s center for the advancement of photonics, is home to 180 companies that were formed to research, develop and commercialize LED products. The city has deployed LED lighting across a wide range of applications in prominent facilities including the Kimdeajung Convention Center, KEMCO Honam Energy & Climate Change Center and the Gwangju Metropolitan City underground parking garage.

By replacing fixtures from parking indicator lights to street lights, the city calculates that, in general, the highly efficient LED lights will use approximately 30-percent less energy than the fluorescent lights they replaced. This could save the city up to 234,000 kWh and reduce carbon emissions by as much as 8,465 kg annually.

“We are excited to showcase LED lighting throughout our city,” said Mayor Park
Kwang-Tae. “A tremendous amount of investment and effort has been put toward various photonics industry technologies locally, and we are proud to demonstrate the energy and maintenance cost savings that can be gained with LED lighting.”

Making Sense

"The City spends substantial amounts of money every year replacing and maintaining lighting. What the LED City initiative means is not necessarily that we will be spending more, but spending more wisely on emerging technology that will save a lot in the long run... The whole point of declaring this public/private initiative is to develop a long-term plan to save money and take advantage of LED technology to spend smartly. The goal is to get the best lighting value for the citizens of Raleigh and serve as a model for other cities seeking to do the same."

Dan Howe, Deputy City Manager, City of Raleigh, NC
