Toronto joined the LED City program in July 2007 after the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas spent four years proactively demonstrating the advantages of LED lighting to businesses and residents.
Toronto’s switch to LED lighting across a range of applications supports its participation in the Clinton Climate Initiative’s goal to accelerate the reductions of carbon emissions.
“Combating climate change is the issue of our time, possibly of all time, and Torontonians are demanding that this city lead by example,” said Mayor David Miller. “We expect that by deploying LEDs throughout Toronto, including in our most famous landmark, the CN Tower, we will be accomplishing the goal of reducing energy use and costs and greenhouse gas emissions.”

"The City spends substantial amounts of money every year replacing and maintaining lighting. What the LED City initiative means is not necessarily that we will be spending more, but spending more wisely on emerging technology that will save a lot in the long run... The whole point of declaring this public/private initiative is to develop a long-term plan to save money and take advantage of LED technology to spend smartly. The goal is to get the best lighting value for the citizens of Raleigh and serve as a model for other cities seeking to do the same."
Dan Howe,
Deputy City Manager, City of Raleigh, NC
